Hillside walk, 02 October 2017

Today's pleasant surprise was to find the California sagebrush (Artemisia californica) in bloom, in numerous places on the west hillside. It's the last of the old season wildflowers to bloom this year, at least the last of those in this survey. I think of it as the last of the old season rather than the beginning of the new season. That's because it blooms before the winter rains arrive. It has had buds developing very visibly over the past couple of months.

This week's walk, on a beautifully mild day, produced no other surprises. It was nice to see the California brickellbush (Brickellia californica) still in high bloom in Canyon 8.
