Ephesus, Turkey

The theater. It held 25,000 people. This is the location of the riot described in the New Testament in Acts 19. The trouble arose because Paul preached against the goddess Diana, and the silversmiths were losing business because fewer people wanted their silver handicrafts honoring Diana. Notice the roadway beyond the theater. It ends at the waterfront, but the ocean has receded about 5 km since the time of Paul, the result of silt washed down from the mountains over the centuries.
