Hillside walk, 02 September 2019
What a joy to find twiggy wreath plant (Stephanomeria sp.), a small plant with three flowers, in the upper part of Canyon 5. This species did not bloom last year. I never know where this species will bloom. It's clearly an annual and each time I've seen it, it's been in a completely different place.
We also now have saw toothed goldenbush (Hazardia squarrosa) in full bloom on the mid north hillside, with substantially more than the usual very few flowers per plant.
The “remnant” bloomers are prominent this week, too. Surprisingly, this includes white sage (Salvia apiana) on the upper north hillside, which "finished" blooming in mid July and now has two or three small, single flowers.
One specimen of laurel sumac (Malosma laurina) along upper Lida Street has many flowers, with numerous bees attending to the flowers. Virtually every other specimen of this species has completely finished flowering.
