Hillside walk, 24 August 2019
Here we are in the height of summer! And to begin its annual blooming season, this week sees the first blooms of saw toothed goldenbush (Hazardia squarrosa) on the mid north hillside. One plant has a single flower open. Another has a bunch of flowers open. overall these plants are loaded with buds, but we only ever see a small number open at any one time.
The brickellbush in Canyon 8 is blooming well, maybe not as profusely as it may become, but certainly with plenty of flowers. At the bottom of Canyon 8 we have California mugwor (Artemisia douglasiana) continuing its bloom.
This week sees a number of flowers that appear to be remnant in nature, that is, just a few flowers left over from the main bloom that is now well over. Examples include deerweed (Acmispon glaber var. glaber), chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum var. fasciculatum), clustered tarplant (Deinandra fasciculata), bush monkeyflower (Diplacus aurantiacus), toyon (Meteromeles arbutifolia), and laurel sumac (Malosma laurina).
