Hillside walk, 09 January 2019

The upward leap in the number of blooming species, signifying early spring, has begun. To me the most beautiful plant is hoaryleaf ceanothus (Ceanothus crassifolius var. planus), with flowers on just the one specimen on the north ridge of Canyon 3. This species also exists elsewhere, such as the north hillside and the Lida Street horseshoe bend.

Other newly blooming species include golden currant (Ribes aureum var. gracillimum) in lower Canyon 2, and the widespread wild cucumber (Marah macrocarpa). Flowers appear also on the coast liveoak (Quercus agrifolia) on Lida Street, and the scrub oak (Quercus sp.) on the upper north hillside.
