Hillside walk, 26 November 2018
Rain of around 10 mm fell on Wednesday last. (It's now Monday.) The hillsides show no evidence of water running off and causing erosion on any of the use tracks, but there are places where bare ground shows the patterns of rain drops. The permanently shaded part of Canyon 8, protected by oak trees, have damp ground; this isn't so evident in unprotected areas. North facing slopes also look damp and have some green grass, such as in upper Canyon 3B and upper Canyon 5.
In Canyon 6, goldback fern (Pentagramma triangularis) suddenly looks bright and health, with a background of California liverwort (Asterella californica).
On the other hand, the flowers aren't so wonderful this week. They have not yet had sufficient time to respond to the rain, and perhaps not enough rain. The new season is beginning to swing, too, with new growth of the vines of wild cucumber (Marah macrocarpa).
