Hillside walk, 23 October 2018

Ten days ago ago we received approximately 9 mm of rain. This is apparent on the hillside in a couple of ways. Green grass has sprung up in sheltered locations. In many places, dead grass that was light brown now has a dark grey or black appearance from rot caused by the dampness.

Despite the rain, the hillside is as dry as ever, with a reduced flower count. Most species that were recently flowering in a reasonable manner now have a much reduced amount of bloom. This is especially noticeable with leafy California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum ssp. foliolosum), which is so common across the hillsides and has good quantities of flowers for most of the year.

One species has suddenly come into fresh bloom, the California sagebrush (Atemisia californica). A small number of plants is in full bloom, including one on the upper north hillside and several on the west hillside. However, most specimens of this widespread species are either still in bud or have no buds.
