Hillside walk, 06 August 2018
This week's flower count is the same as it was last week.
Last week's observation indicated the clustered tarplant (Deinandra fasciculata), that prominent mid summer feature at the bottom of the north hillside, had finished blooming. But this week the largest of the three plants has a single flower.
Another surprise was in the lower Canyon 2, protected behind the Lida Street berm, a single flower of bush monkey flower (Diplacus aurantiacus). Similarly, the California poppy (Eschscholtzia californica) in the Lida Street horseshoe has a single flower, compare with no flowers last week.
On upper Lida Street, it was unusual to find not a single flower on the toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia). It typically has a few flowers throughout the year, but maybe it is impacted this year by the heavy coating of fire retardant, which was applied by the city prior to July 4th. And maybe it has yet to produce some remnant flowers.
