Hillside walk, 21 July 2018

What a becutifully mild day this was. But more heat next week.

As is typical for this time of year, not much is blooming on the hillsides. One note of brightness is that the California coffeeberry (Frangula californica), a prominent small tree on the mid north hillside, has many new flowers this week. It has been in flower since late March and its main flowering period is over, but this week it has more flowers than in recent times.

At the bottom of the north hillside is the clustered tarplant (Deinandra fasciculata). It's an annual, and this year it has only three specimens, fewer than usual. It's still blooming well, but is slightly beyond its peak. It grows in the same place as the California suncup (Camissoniopsis bistorta). These two do not bloom together, but when the suncup finishes, the tarplant begins its flowering virtually immediately.

The sprinkling of yucca flowers continues (Hesperoyucca whipplei), with four or five of them widely scattered across the north and west hillsides.
