Hillside walk, 05 May 2014
The peak of the spring bloom has now passed although plenty of flowers remain. And the mustard is thicker than ever, necessitating extra care on the slopes. Flowers that have finished this week include strigose lotus (Acmispon strigosus) and the two Rhamnus species. Four o'clock (Mirabilis laevis var. crassifolia) has completed finished on the north hillside although a few flowers persist on the west hillside.
But with the progress of the season, some new flowers appeared. These included: California primrose (Eulobus californicus),l which I've not seen before in this area; narrow leaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis); southern honeysuckle (Lonicera subspicata var. denudata), although this species also bloomed in February, albeit weakly; common muilla (Muilla maritima); holly leaf cherry (Prusus ilicifolia ssp. ilicifolia); and the glorious valley cholla (Cylindropuntia californica).
This week Whispering bells (Emmenanthe peduliflora var. peduliflora), previously seen only to the immediate west of our house, was also found on the bare ridge between Canyons 3 and 4, and in Canyon 3. In the latter location it was prolific in one spot. And wherever it was, the flowers are now more open than previously.
