Hillside walks, 06 and 07 April 2013
The sun cups that have been so special for several weeks have now all gone to seed. Popcorn flower is rapidly withering. California bluebell (Phacelia minor) is now few in number, and much smaller. Poison oak has gone to seed. Clematis is starting to go to seed. Mulefat is mostly now in seed. The one plant of lemonade berry now has no flowers. (This plant looks like it gets eaten by animals.) Mountain mahogany has newly gone to seed. Surprisingly, white flowering currant this week had a single stem of flowers, although it is now basically in fruit. Goldenback fern is beginning to wither as moisture in the soil evaporates.
The cobweb thistle on the north hillside, which I've been watching for a couple of weeks, now is in full bloom, and magnificent. Horehound is in bloom. Elderberry now has many more blossoms although it's not yet at its peak. Deerweed is beginning to bloom this week. Buckwheat and monkeyflower still have only a few flowers, but are loaded with buds; shortly these flowers should be in profusion.
Dodder is beginning to appear, primarily on laurel sumac, but no flowers yet.
