Hillside walk, 02 September 2016
What a joy to see the saw toothed goldenbush (Hazardia squarrosa) now in widespread bloom, the pinnacle of summer flowers. The numbers are never great, but the flowers are spread over the mid to upper north hillside and in Canyon 4. This flowering always provides a sense of completeness to the summer.
Another new flower this week is the western ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya). It is at the beginning of its blooming. The plants themselves are fewer and smaller than last year. They are located on the berm that separates lower Canyon 2 from Lida Street, which implies that this species is not necessarily native here. It may have been brought in with the berm material.
