Hillside walk, 21 September 2015
Tuesday morning saw a non-seasonal rain of almost 2 inches. The rain wasn't unduly heavy and the resulting erosion is only moderate. Green shoots of grass are apparent in many parts of the hillside.
The changes from last week's flowering are minor. The total count remained the same. However, American lotus (Acmispon americanus var. americanus) is no longer blooming — it had been blooming so nicely since late June in the protection of a deerweed bush. Also, we have fresh flowers of California brickellbush (Brickellia californica).
An almost certain result of the rain is the rejuvenation in flowering of rattlesnake weed (Chamaesyce sp.) on the north hillside. Probably also a response to the rain is an increase in the number of bush monkeyflowers (Diplacus longiflorus) in the lower Canyon 2.
