Hillside walk, 02 March 2015
Rain overnight, just one week after the previous lot! It totalled 15 mm, a quantity that should help greatly in extending the spring bloom. But meanwhile, while there was no rain during the weekly hillside walk, apart from a few sprinkles, the long grass is full of water. My shoes became completely waterlogged. Many of the flowers look wilted from the rain. For example, the blue dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum ssp. capitatum) are in full bloom at the bottom of the north hillside, but every one is bent over completely.
This week collar lupine (Lupinus truncatus) was found in two different parts of the hillside. The miniature lupine (Lupinus bicolor) continues to bloom in the same place as last week. However, I could not find last week's stinging lupine (Lupinus hirsutissimus).
Another new flower for the season is whispering bells (Emmenanthe peduliflora var. peduliflora), which has just a few in bloom on the south hillside.
It was surprising to find not a single California suncup (Camissoniopsis bistorta). Perhaps the rain is keeping it away. Maybe it will be back next week. We'll see.
